Grief is the earth’s pressure, mercilessly crushing the life out of an ugly and useless lump of carbon; it presses so vigorously that the very basic make up of it changes, atoms rearranged in minute detail until, tired of its mindless playing, the earth spews it out in an eruption of anger and fire. Changed but alive, that useless lump of carbon has turned into a diamond, no longer weak, no longer ugly; but the most beautiful and hardest of commodities humanity has come to know. For us, giving up is never an option, death never the solution. We strive, we endure, and we change the makeup of our very souls until a beautiful, hard surface, is born; one that makes us invaluable to the world.
